CSM students present a fountainhead of discovery

Last Friday TAG were in attendance at the final, end of project, presentation from our Central Saint Martins BA Ceramic students (AKA Ceram Fam) - as an eight-week section of their second year coursework came to a close. It seemed some time ago when we first met the six individuals who would be the willing recipients of our brief.

And so it was, with a certain degree of both maternal and paternal trepidation, that we sat and listened to a well-orchestrated showing of both film, slide, narration and 3-dimensional discovery. At its conclusion (joyously capped with a self-effacing epilogue movie clip) we could see the process had been a learning journey on many levels. One that had touched upon greatness, and with perhaps a little more time, achieved top marks.

Overall, we felt this impromptu client team had overcome the inevitable issues of cohesiveness, and forged a very mature and responsible unit. Their self-initiated Clay Day, held at our Chinese Community Centre, was a high point. And perhaps best represented the TAG ethos. And although the end point did not fall on a definitive fabrication, or tangible product, there were sufficient glimmers of light to suggest some of the cracks within the TAG streetscape could be filled with their inspiration.

One of the most pleasing aspects which underlay all our thinking was that one needs to form a successful micro-community, in order to best serve the desires of the bigger community. We wish them well. And hope their experience with TAG, both individually and collectively, has opened their eyes.

Central Saint Martins student's Pop Up Clay Day

Students from the BA Ceramics Course, at London's Central Saint Martins University of the Arts, will be hosting a one-off Clay Day on Saturday 13th April 2013. In conjunction with our local Chinese Community centre, they will be presenting an opportunity to experiment, engage, and even entertain.

Come along and make your mark in another opportunity to be involved with the arts, on your own doorstep!

Central Saint Martins - The briefing

On Wednesday morning, at Cafeteria, we met with a very punctual, and equally attentive group of six students from Central St Martins.

After a short resume of what TAG stood for, we then set the brief for their 2nd year Ceramics BA course. Which began:

'Our brief is to design a product which reflects and improves the urban landscape we live in. It can solve a problem or be a practical solution; be a one off, or part of a multiple deployed throughout the neighbourhood. The design should reflect the environment and natural forms, but could also be a solution to everyday visual ‘eyesores’.'

As well as social heritage and the narrative of local history, an array of other criteria formed what we hope will be a challenging and rewarding 8-week project.

This first meeting was concluded with a brief tour of the neighbourhood, where we highlighted some of the potential locations and inspiration points.

Central comes north

The Turnpike Art Group are delighted to have been selected as part of a client list working with second-year students at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, studying on the BA Ceramic Design course. Central Saint Martins is part of University of the Arts London, Europe's largest centre for education in art, communication and design.

Our role will include setting a brief, and operating as a client for students, who will function as a design consultancy within an 8-week project - Design Relationships. An extract from the unit below:

The design challenge

You will develop a concept wherein the narrative or story drives the understanding of the object. As already expressed above this may mean an object with an obvious message or a collection that expounds a new way of thinking in a discreet and thoughtful design proposition   You are required to explore the social, physical, ethnographic, emotional facets to your project in order to produce designs that have a lasting resonance and value.

The client project involves 5 groups of 2nd Year Ceramic design students who will act as a design consultancy to a particular client.

TAG were chosen alongside Do–shop, Sebastian Bergne, Boskke and Simon Stevens.
